![]() Racial and generational trauma goes underdiagnosed all the time because race, racism, and whiteness are still not things we feel comfortable talking about in society. My aim is to assist and journey with my clients to identify and develop culturally affirming and healing ways and patterns of processing trauma that would be transmitted generationally. Racial and generational trauma goes underdiagnosed all the timeĪs a relational therapist, I believe that social cultural oppression, such as racism, sexism, heterosexism, etc., creates interpersonal and intergenerational trauma that assaults the dignity and humanity of individuals and those they are in relationship with. We call these invisible racial trauma wounds – we don't see them. ![]() When you feel voiceless, your rage increases as well. I see people either isolate themselves from their partner or get really angry and upset with them. So if you feel like you don't have the words to fully explain what's happening to you, especially with people who cannot inherently relate to or understand what you're experiencing, you begin to internalize that and take it out on your loved ones and the people who are closest to you. There's also relational manifestation, which mostly presents itself as a feeling of not being able to use your voice when you are experiencing or witnessing racism. Then there's the emotional manifestations, like depression, anxiety, isolation. Other physical manifestations of generational trauma are a lack of sleep, physical pain like back aches, or irregular eating habits. This could look like imposter syndrome, anxiety, increased heart rate, or a loss of focus. When we enter new spaces, and in particular predominantly white spaces, the effects of generational trauma can show up. When you feel voiceless, your rage increases as well So that trauma continued to be passed down from generation to generation, and we still don't fully have that kind of care. People need to understand that after slavery was abolished, there was no mental or emotional care that allowed African Americans to talk about the emotional, psychological, and spiritual impacts. These forms of trauma date back to the transatlantic slave trade and the impact of the enslavement and torture of African Americans.įollowing that, the Jim Crow era created this feeling of devaluation, from constantly seeing people who look like you being devalued, ostracized, and being deemed as not good enough. I think that's because we don't want to talk about race, and particularly whiteness, in our society. We don't usually put racial trauma in the same categories as sexual abuse, or the trauma that veterans go through. We don't want to talk about race, and particularly whiteness, in our society That itself is a form of generational-racial trauma because you have to explain this to your kid, and it's not because you want to, it's because society still disavows, dehumanizes, discriminates, and ostracizes Black people and people of color just because of their skin. For example, when Black families have "the talk" with their kids about racism and safety and how to handle situations with police, that is based on experiences of being discriminated against and traumatized because of skin color. Racial trauma and generational trauma are intertwined because racial trauma can be passed down generationally. It can be passed down either implicitly or explicitly, whether by the person actually experiencing the weakness in the generation above them, or it can be passed down through narratives that the family speaks to each other about. Generational trauma, which can also be intergenerational trauma or transgenerational trauma, is basically when experiences that are detrimental emotionally, mentally, physically, relationally, and even spiritually, are passed down from one generation to the next generation, whether knowingly or unknowingly. It has been edited for length and clarity. This is an as-told-to essay based on a conversation with Christiana Awosan, a licensed marriage and family therapist based in New York City who specializes in generational and racial trauma. ![]() ![]() Most modern dungeon crawlers have a “head bob” effect to give you a visual cue that you’ve moved from space to space. They also don’t have smooth scrolling from step to step as you explore, which is initially disorientating. Map designs are hardly of the intricate, puzzle-and-trap-filled variety as in Etrian Odyssey. In most ways, Sakura Dungeon is incredibly efficient as a dungeon crawler. Then you can add her to your party and continue to explore with the new ally. Do that and the monster girl turns herself over to you. You want to reduce the character’s health to almost nothing via the turn-based combat system, and then use a special “capture” special ability. ![]() It does look more like a harem, really.Ĭapturing “monsters” works just like it does in Pokémon. The difference is that the “monsters” in this game are actually very fanservicey women, and your job isn’t just to defeat them, but also to capture them, Pokémon-style, and add them to your growing army. Sakura Dungeon is, as the name suggests, a first-person dungeon crawler, in the vein of Wizardry, or the recently-released Etrian Odyssey HD collection. The Nintendo Switch port of Sakura Dungeon has also been released this past week, and while it too has its most adult excesses curbed to get a console berth, this one has much more going for it as an actual video game, and remains a good time. This is a truly terrible “erotic” game that needed to remove the one “quality” it had going for it so it could have a console release. Just yesterday I reviewed Demon Sword Incubus. ![]() The domestic architecture, pithouses, were partially excavated into the ground, largely constructed of wood and earth, and much more substantial than the constructions of the preceding Archaic period peoples. The Basketmaker period also marked a transition in hunting and warfare technology, from the atlatl or “dart thrower” to the bow and arrow. They made exquisite baskets, sandals, and other textiles but no pottery, for which reason they have come to be known as Basketmakers. People of the Early Basketmaker period were reliant upon agricultural crops, corn and squash, and developed strategies and storage facilities for these foods. “Archaeological traditions” distinguish apparent similarities in pottery, stone tools, buildings, clothing, basketry, and rock art styles, among other things, that are found in particular parts of the Southwest. We turn to specifics of the Mesa Verde tradition, which spans southeastern Utah and southwestern Colorado, for the rest of our discussion.įigure 1:The “archaeological traditions” map indicates locations of apparent groups of people in the Four Corners region prior to the 1200s migration. In Utah, the two traditions that emerged were the Virgin (west of the Colorado River) and the Mesa Verde (east of the Colorado River) traditions (Figure 1). To the south, in Arizona, archaeologists have distinguished the Kayenta tradition to the southwest, in what is now New Mexico, they have identified the Chaco tradition (Figure 1). In southeastern Utah, for example, these periods are approximately:Īs farming and village life established itself in the region, several subcultures or “traditions” of Ancestral Pueblo people became evident across the landscapes we now know as Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. The sequence of periods is referred to as the “Pecos Classification,” the dates of which vary slightly across the greater Southwest. Because these changes occurred over broad spans of time and across wide landscapes, researchers summarize Ancestral Pueblo history according to “periods” of time to understand better how changes occurred in Ancestral Pueblo societies. ![]() The deep history of Ancestral Pueblo culture is characterized by changes in architecture, technology, community settlement plans, clothing, and rock art styles (among other things). Although maize appears as early as 2000 BCE in the vicinity of the Four Corners, it’s not until 300 BCE that evidence of maize is consistently found in the households of people of the region. Their predecessors, nomadic Archaic period peoples, had principally relied upon wild food resources since the end of the Pleistocene epoch around 8000 BCE. Ancestral Pueblo peoples lived in the Four Corners region, including southern Utah, from about 300 BCE to 1300 CE, and are basically identified by their strong commitment to maize (corn) agriculture. The Ancestral Pueblo are the ancestors of descendant Pueblo peoples who now reside in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. ![]() Since the simulations demonstrate the theories with different features. This can be answered through the simulations or games we made. Making sure if the logic of the real world is applied to the simulator.Īll the work throughout this project helped me answer this projects driving question: “How can the behaviour of matter be explained by the kinetic molecular and atomic theory”. Another thing was making sure our games were scientifically accurate. This was developed over time getting used to scratch and was a skill I believe I could have shown better through more practice with scratch. Coding requires using logic & prediction, since we didn’t have time to go through every single coding pattern. I had to go through many revisions with my coding, trying out different patterns to solve problems that came up (spoiler alert: a lot did). Scratch is a block-based programming language, targeted at elementary and middle school students. Now we’re coding the game in milestone 5, where most of the learning is demonstrated. There are two primary types of coding languages: text-based and block-based. After analyzing scratch to see what it could do for this project I decided on a simulator where you can change the type of particle & its temperature which changes the state of matter. I had to use reasoning when planning out my game. This is just a short list of all the features, purposes, how the simulator demonstrates kinetic molecular theory, and how its interactive. Milestone 4 is where we finally start to get to the coding with a coding plan. I didn’t do well on the test, but it definitely made me want to learn more about the topic. Here is where my curiosity for the project was shown. ![]() This test was not for marks but to see where everyone is and what we need to cover more thoroughly. Our third milestone was a written test based on everything we have been learning. This is where our scientific communication skills came in, as we wouldn’t have been able to complete the milestone without it. ![]() Scratch is easy to access through any browser and has a supportive community where students can share and remix projects and games. It’s a coding playground and teaches kids in a fun and accessible way. The models we made had to be scientifically accurate with the amount of electrons, neutrons, and protons, and the different atoms in the molecules. Scratch is a drag-and-drop coding language that helps kids learn about computer science. With all the learning we had done, it was time to apply it in milestone 2 in creating our particle models. Some of the questions I could only understand because I wrote them. When I went back to answer my questions I saw my scientific communication skills improve. The mind map was to show any knowledge we already have on these 2 topics as well as questions we would answer at the end of the project. We started the project of pretty standard with milestone 1 being a mind map. The end goal was for everyone to have a simulator or game that demonstrates the kinetic molecular theory & the atomic theory. This was a short but fun 3 week solo project. What you’re seeing above is my simulator (coded in scratch) for the “Chemistry Coding” Scimatics project.
